Have you heard of Spinal Energetics?
What is it?
Spinal Energetics blends Eastern energy healing techniques with Western understanding of the spine, fascia and nervous system.
It is a holistic modality that incorporates structural assessment with energy work and intuition, prompting the body to make changes where needed at its own pace.
Would I benefit from Spinal Energetics?
If you have ever felt that your body is holding on to stress, tension or emotions that you just can’t seem to shift, then Spinal Energetics may be able to help.
Our bodies hold onto our experiences, good and bad. Our fascia can store these as patterns of tension or restriction, and even when we think we have moved on from something, our body can still respond as though we are holding onto it. This might show up as physical tension, limited range of movement or pain; or long held emotions, or our mental capacity for coping with day-to-day life.
How does it work?
SE works with the spine, nervous system and energetic field by assessing posture, tension and restrictions along the spine then uses light touch and non-contact techniques to invite the body to reorganise and make changes.
Using light touch around the spine, energetic awareness, breath and sound, Spinal Energetics works with the chakras and energy surrounding your body, inviting it to tune into its own natural capacity for self-regulation and healing. In this way, your spine, nervous system and energetic field can release stored tension, emotions and patterns.
Sound is an important component of the work. The music is part of the session and may be louder or more dynamic than you are used to if you’ve had other therapies aimed mainly at relaxation. The practitioner also uses sound and breath alongside movement to guide and focus attention and energy to the area being focussed on.
The beauty of this technique is that your body’s innate wisdom guides the session. Once you lay on the couch, you learn to tune into your own mind body connection. Spinal Energetics can guide your body to release whatever is needed that session.
How will Spinal Energetics make me feel?
People can respond in different ways. This might be a change in breathing, deep sighs or emotional release, changes in posture or small involuntary movements such as little twitches. Often changes are happening internally - the client feels different, but little can witnessed by the practitioner.
They may have a sense of something shifting, see colours or imagery, a deep emotional recognition or a stillness. Fascia can shift under the skin with nothing visible to be seen on the surface. These signs are all significant and evidence of the body integrating.
I’ve seen reels with people moving and shaking - will I move during a session?
It is helpful to bear in mind that while social media often shows theatrical reels of clients moving, stretching or shaking during a session, in reality most clients won’t experience such a dramatic reaction, and it is helpful not to come to your session with a preconceived idea of what it might look like.
Movement is just one way the body may choose to communicate and integrate. As clients progress with sessions, they may experience more movement as their body reorganises and releases long held tension patterns.
Most clients experience something happening on the inside, rather than a more dramatic, physical expression of movement. These sessions are no less real or profound, in fact, may be arguably more so.
Responses can include physical release such as tight muscles relaxing, feeling looser and more open in the body, gentle realignment or a reduction in pain. Or it may be emotional, a release of stored emotion or clearing.
Your body continues to integrate and change in the days after the session too. You may feel lighter, freer, less stressed or have less pain. Clients often feedback subtle shifts in how they think, feel or manage day to day life.
Think of Spinal Energetics as space for your body and mind to slow down, tune in and reconnect.
Will it all happen in one session?
Probably not. As with other modalities, you will get the most from SE if you have several sessions to build upon and allow time for changes to integrate. Think of it like going to the gym. One session can feel great but the effects won’t linger. A number of sessions allows the work to build and accumulate so the effects can last.
