What is Kinesiology?

What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a holistic therapy which uses gentle muscle testing to gain bio-mechanical feedback from the body to determine physical, emotional, nutritional or energetic stress. It then uses specific techniques to balance energy and optimise potential.

Kinesiology draws upon principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine to balance the body’s energy pathways using the Meridian system. Energy moves through the body along a series of channels and these can become blocked as a result of physical and emotional stresses, which if left unresolved, can manifest as ill health.  We store our issues in our tissues.

Using muscle testing allows us to find and identify stresses within our physical body and emotional mind.

How does muscle testing work?

Different muscles may be tested during a session and usually one may be used throughout as an ‘indicator muscle’, often the arm, to check things as we go along.

The muscle is placed in a position of optimal contraction with the aim to shorten and straighten the muscle fibres to identify a stress.  Basically, the client holds their arm out, gentle pressure is applied, and the arm will either remain where it is or drop down as the client is unable to maintain the position.  This is known as an “unlock” and indicates a response to a stress.  It’s very cool when a muscle just “unlocks” and the arm falls away!

Muscle testing is not about strength, nor is a lock or an unlock a positive or negative thing – rather, the response either way gives us feedback and then guides the progression of the session.

How do you balance the body’s energy?

Muscle testing shows us where there are imbalances and what is needed to rebalance energy in the body.  There are many techniques which can be utilised to achieve this, including massaging neuro-lymphatic points, holding neurovascular points, tracing Meridian pathways, acupuncture holding points or eating more or less of a substance to achieve nutritional balance.  More on this in a future post!

What can Kinesiology help with?

Kinesiology works on physical / structural, mental / emotional and biochemical (nutritional) levels.  It can help with posture and pain conditions, emotional issues such as anxiety or grief, and help identify foods which can raise or lower the body’s energy.

Almost anything that causes stress can be the focus of a kinesiology session!  From anxiety about a forthcoming job interview, feelings of past, present or future overwhelm, positive mindset for a sporting event, wanting to be more productive or achieve a better work/life balance, a sense of feeling ‘stuck’ or not utilising creativity.

What happens during a treatment?

Appointments start with a consultation during which we identify your goal for that session.  Time is taken to familiarise you with muscle testing and what this feels like.  The session is performed fully clothed and you may be seated, standing or lying down, depending on what we are working on. Gentle muscle testing guides us regarding where there are imbalances and what is needed to correct them.

Sessions are interactive as the client is engaged with the muscle testing and provides verbal feedback throughout. Sessions are enjoyable and often fun. Clients often report a shift and leave feeling different and more positive after a treatment.

How many treatments do I need?

This is subjective and depends on what we are aiming to get from the session. It may be that a short course of treatments at more frequent weekly / fortnightly intervals would be helpful, particularly if we are working with past issues or chronic pain conditions. At other times, one session as and when needed might be all that is required to help keep you feeling good, on top of things and maintaining health. Many people like to have a top up at intervals, in the same way they may utilise Bowen, Reflexology or other modalities.
