McLoughlin Scar Release Technique
Surgery or traumatic scarring can cause symptoms such as pain or numbness in the scar area; referred pain or lack of sensitivity; and movement restrictions. Scar release work can affect nerve tissue to normalise sensations, increase blood flow to the area, and increase lymphatic drainage. It can also work on an energetic level to promote emotional healing and wellbeing, as meridians are ‘unblocked’.
What it involves
A typical session will include a consultation regarding the history of the scar (e.g. how it was acquired – planned or unplanned surgery, accident or trauma), and how the scar effects you physically and emotionally. The technique is applied directly to the scar and surrounding tissue. It is gentle, and always performed well within the client's level of comfort.

Questions you might have
-
Primarily anyone with surgical scars, scars from injury or trauma; no matter how old the scars are, or what size they are; including knee surgery, Caesarian, hysterectomy or underlying scar tissue injuries. Often people don’t connect their scar with current issues – for example, an abdominal scar can be linked to lower back pain due to it pulling on the fascia. C-section scars can cause lasting tightness and tugging sensations on certain movements, such as during exercise, and create a "mum tum" as a result of the skin being tucked into tight scar tissue.

Help with symptoms associated with scar tissue including the appearance of the scar (it may flatten or change colour to better blend in with the surrounding tissue), numbness or desensitisation, hypersensitivity, burning, itching and pain. Range of movement can increase, and pulling sensations can reduce. It can also help with difficult feelings surrounding the scar itself, or the circumstances which led to its formation. Often client’s report previous negative feelings to have lessened or gone completely, they feel more positive and accepting, and it can trigger emotional healing.
A recent pilot study in June 2019 on three women with Caesarian scars showed amazing results regarding physical change to the scar tissue underneath the skin. All three subjects were scanned before and after one 15 minute application of the scar release technique. All three were shown to have decreased scar tissue in the post treatment scan. In fact, one participant’s longitudinal scar reduced in size from 22.7mm pre-treatment to just 10.4mm post-treatment.
This pilot study has led to further research on a larger sample of women - the results of which will be published later this year!
The technique can also be used on areas of underlying scar tissue where there is no external scar on the skin, meaning that issues such as Plantar Fasciitis, Frozen Shoulder and muscle tears from sports injury can also respond brilliantly.

Scar release work will typically take one initial session, during which no other Bowen work is performed. If further sessions are needed, these may be stand alone sessions, or combined with Bowen treatments, depending on your individual circumstances and treatment plan. 70% of clients report good effect after just one session!
